With my partner now decided I worked on a final thesis paper. This would be the paper that would need approval by the school before I would be allowed to participate in the bonding ceremony held in short time.

While I awaited my answer I decided to travel into Garrison to search for clothing and supplies that would be of use for me come that time.

It was down the path and at the gate that I realized how intimidating Garrison truly was. It is a mecca for the military in Cenozoica.

As I set atop Wayra I realized how vastly vulnerable I was in this port city. Here there were no trees which I could flee through. I was surrounded by a swath of defenders, peacekeepers and armed ports-men in a brick and stone fortress.

The watchful eyes were almost suppressing. Making sure Cenozoican law was not questioned.

New, I had not an idea of where anything was so, with caution, I approached a peacekeeper and commandeered him for directions to the nearest clothing shop. Although heavily used by the military I found Garrison at the core was no different from Anvita, though many times larger. Most of the market area was near the water edge, where goods may be freshly delivered by ship. The stores, though scattered about, were mostly near there as well for ease of access.

It was there I went.

Near the port I dismounted and lead Wayra by reins, the male seemingly not phased by the number of guards. Though the often predatory partner animal would occasionally make him anxious.

There were many a trader or store clerk that were willing to take my currency (Gold, silver and copper coins) or a trade. I still had yet to rid myself of the Mesembriornis goods I had acquired from my encounter in upper Neogenia. Now I had made crafts from the bones and feathers as well as preserved the hide for sell or trade. Such a bird was worth a lot in a city such as Jewel or Garrison, I took what I could get.

With the money I now possessed I was able to acquire higher quality items. As well as a few books which would aid me in my research. I wanted to be sure I could care for my partner if that time came. I had little worry however as I read the Haast's Eagle possessed a 50 percent mortality rate during the first year in the wild. This eagle was a captive adult.

No, now that I thought of it, he is a free adult who, aside from the bond, will have free range.  I suspect he will want to stay close,  otherwise I will give him whatever space he wants.

Once I had my clothing for the bonding ceremony and a few other items I took the supplies back to my dorm room before riding out to the farm to visit the eagle and work on a necklace.

During my trip in town I had acquired a pouch of ruby beads, some eagle talons, which I would compare to the Haast's Eagle whom watched me, a bone which to carve and strong string which to tie it all together.

As I worked I set the beads and talons in place, temporarily tying it off as I knew it would take a few days to carve the bone into the intricate picture I imagined.

The Eagle, inquisitive, grasped the unfinished necklace in his beak the moment I set it aside. Though when the rehabilitator came into the room he hid it into one of my pockets. His intelligence striking, and the action amusing.

"How is he doing?" I asked. As the eagle seemed to not improve much today as well.

"It isn't much, but better. The wing will slowly heal." She explained kindly before asking rather suggestively. "Would you like to feed him?"

I nodded as I rose to my feet, the eagle following eagerly.

"We have been providing fresh meat strips for him daily." she elaborated. "We make sure he has had plenty before giving what is left to the Terror Birds." I took a strip offered to me and held it out in the Eagle's line of sight. He hesitated, not used to it being from my hand. after inspection he tilted his head and pulled it from my grasp. Swallowing it down hungrily. I continued to offer him food until he became uninterested. The woman removed the remains from the room shortly after.

It was now I observed the eagle clean himself. Tidying up to a pristine image, despite a broken wing.

I observed him for some time before he noticed my eyes on him. I pressed back against the support of my chair as he hopped onto the arm rests, a single foot per rest. He was leaned back slightly so we did not touch. He was as tall or taller than I was at this moment, presenting an even field of vision. silently he shifted his balance to his right foot and used the left to scoop into the pocket I had placed the unfinished necklace in. The curved talons caught the necklace and he pulled it out, his hallux keeping the necklace from falling from his grasp as he pulled back, using his good wing to provide momentum in his jump.

Now he was on the ledge again, the necklace held under his left foot in a somewhat playful yet possessive manner. I shifted, meaning to rise to try and take back the necklace, however I paused as a thought came to my mind. It must be boring being locked up inside and unable to fly. The eagle was trying to sate his interests.

With this in mind I stood and tried to grab the necklace. Though he grabbed my hand with his beak (lightly enough to not break the skin) and lifted my arm away, dropping it to the side. Was this going to be a game? I wondered. This time I used my left hand as a distraction and tried with the right, though he did not fall for it and slid his foot back, taking the necklace with it.

"You are quick-witted..." I found myself commenting towards the eagle's game. To which he seemed to understand as a compliment, most likely from the tone of my voice. His head raised some and chest puffed a small bit as he raised, though I could tell he was feeling the pain from his wing, as the action was accompanied by an almost unseen wince.

I and the eagle would go back and fourth in my attempt to regain my necklace back, and eventually I would. Though seeing as it was beginning to grow dark I decided it was best I leave.

Once I returned to my dorm room I locked the door and begun my routine. Setting the necklace and the bone on the top of my dresser before preparing to bed for the night. Sitting on the bedside I began to undo my boots, though was interrupted by a knock on the door which alerted me. Cautious, I answered...the door opening to reveal two peacekeepers standing in the hallway. Accompanied by dire wolf partners.

"May I help you?" I asked.

"Kairys Llywelyn?"

I nodded.

"You are under arrest, we suggest you come quietly..."

I really like this one!
I like the intelligence of the eagle, and the game they play. I like the ending, too. Good cliffhanger.
I think it'd be cool if you illustrated the last bit, where they're standing there in the doorway.
